What You Will Study

Part-Time GCSE Maths:

You will study topics on Number, Algebra, Ratio, Geometry, Probability and Statistics. The GCSE Mathematics specification focuses on how these areas of mathematics are connected to the real world and how the skills acquired can be applied flexibly to solve problems.

Part-Time Functional Skills Classes:

For the Entry Level qualifications, depending on the level, you will study numbers, fractions, money, decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, measure and shape, and data handling. At Levels 1 and 2 you will study all aspects of numeracy and the tests will cover problem solving, interpreting information, calculating, measuring, and presenting information.

  • Attendance Expectations

    Part-Time GCSE Maths:

    One day/evening per week - various classes available.

    Part-Time Adult Maths Classes:

    This is a 20-week course, requiring students to attend a three hour session each week either in the day or on an evening.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

    Part-Time GCSE Maths:

    The Scheme of Assessment is linear with three exam papers to be taken at the end of the year. Paper 1 is non calculator and makes up one third of the total marks. Paper 2 and Paper 3 are calculator papers each making up one third of the marks. All three exams are 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no assessed coursework element for this course.

    Part-Time Functional Skills Classes:

    Your progress will be reviewed throughout the course and you will receive feedback following assessments.  There will be a final assessment at the end of the course consisting an externally marked exam for Level 1 and Level 2 or an internally marked exam for Entry Level.

  • Entry Requirements

    Part-Time GCSE Maths:

    Either GCSE Maths Grade 3. However, all prospective students will need to complete an initial assessment task to assess their suitability for the course.

    Part-Time Functional Skills Classes:

    You do not need any qualifications to enrol on this course. You will have a one-to-one interview and an informal, confidential assessment of your skills before you start.  Following assessment you will be advised of the most suitable qualification and level for you.

  • Further Study

    Part-Time GCSE Maths:

    Many jobs identify GCSE Mathematics as a basic requirement as do Higher Education courses. Wakefield College also offers a range of courses for which GCSE Mathematics is either a requirement or very useful.

    Part-Time Functional Skills Classes:

    You may be able to progress onto other maths courses, GCSEs, or other academic or vocational courses.  We can offer you advice to help you make future choices.
