Volunteers from the University of Cambridge visited Wakefield College recently to provide exciting science activities for children and young people aged 7-14.
Cambridge Hands On Science (CHaOS) is a group of students from the University of Cambridge, including former Wakefield College student Grace Exley, who volunteered over the summer holidays to run workshops across the country aimed at young people interested in Science.
The group provide local children with exciting experiments which included programming a robot, learning about aerodynamics, identifying different species of animals and creating mini explosions!
The parent of Amelia (age 8) and Saoirse (age 6) said: “My girls were completely engaged from the moment the scientific topics began! Everyone was encouraged to participate, and it was evident they learnt a lot from their answers to the questions raised.” Jacson (age 8) said: “I liked getting to learn by doing everything myself”.
The activities were all hands-on and the volunteers gave the children a chance to try out the experiment for themselves, while encouraging them to ask questions and be inquisitive.
The budding scientists also got to experience life at Wakefield College, viewing the Science department and exploring the City Centre campus.
CHaOS will return to Wakefield next summer for more exciting experiments.
