A Mechanics’ Performing Arts student has beaten off competition from more than 2000 entrants to be crowned Miss Dance Great Britain 2019.
Grace Hawksworth, who studies on the Level 3 Musical Theatre course at Wakefield College’s Mechanics’ Theatre on Wood Street, impressed the judges at Winter Gardens Blackpool over the weekend to claim the top prize.
Grace, who has been dancing since she was three years old, performed to a medley of songs from Gypsy the musical - a piece she was familiar with having studied it as part of her course.
Commenting on her achievement, Grace said: “This was the third year I have entered the competition and it was third time lucky for me. I couldn’t believe it when they announced my name as the winner. All my family were there to cheer me on, and I feel so proud to have won the competition.
“My lecturers Emma Bolland and Paul Dale-Vickers have been great and given me so much encouragement to succeed. I had amazing support from College with everyone wishing me good luck. The course has really improved my stage presence and allowed me to confidently showcase my skills.”
Performing Arts lecturer, Emma Bolland said: “We are all so incredibly proud of what Grace has achieved by winning such a prestigious national dance competition. Our Mechanics’ Performing Arts have a long list of students who have gone onto to achieve success in their respective fields and it’s another fillip in our cap with Grace being crowned Miss Dance 2019.”
