Selby College Business students have raised more than £940 for Young Lives vs Cancer after hosting a successful charity football match.
Held at Selby Town Football Club, the Kids vs Adults match saw students and parents take to the pitch to raise funds for the charity.
Alongside ticket entry, the Level 3 Business students also created a programme which attendees could purchase and held a sweet stall and raffle during the match.
Young Lives vs Cancer is the UK's leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families.
Sophie Hartley, Fundraising Events & Engagement Executive at Young Lives vs Cancer said: “At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Every day, 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. Donations and fundraisers such as these, no matter how big or small, enable us in our fight for young lives against cancer. Thank you to the students at Selby College for their tremendous fundraising efforts, it will directly help our cause and all the families that we support. We’re so thankful to the students for their dedication in organising the charity football match and to see young fundraisers supporting young people facing cancer, which is simply fantastic.”
Aimee Lumby, Level 3 Business student at Selby College: “My course mates and I really enjoyed arranging and hosting the Kids vs Adult charity football match. When we were tasked with planning an event for our module, we knew we wanted to organise a fundraiser for a deserving charity such as Young Lives vs Cancer, but I never imagined we would raise nearly £1000 for the cause. We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who turned up to support us on the day and via our Just Giving page.”
This comes after the students donated £144 to Cancer Research, hosting an Easter-themed fundraiser which included a quiz, bake-sale and raffle.”
A Murder Mystery themed event was also arranged by the College students, as well as a team building event at Laser Quest in Selby.
The students even got primary school pupils involved in their events by hosting a Dragons Den themed workshop at Marshlands Primary School in Goole, where the pupils had to design and create their very own cereal, promotional character and packaging.
Alison Ruston, Business Lecturer at Selby College: “I’m incredibly proud of the students for their efforts and the hard work they have put into organising these events. Since the start of their assignment, they have taken their ideas and ran with them. This experience has been invaluable in teaching them how to effectively organise and host a successful event, all whist raising more than £1000 for deserving cancer charities.”
Hairdressing tutor Beverley Wilson also completed the Cycle the Month challenge in May to fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK. Beverley cycled over 200 miles to reach her goal and raised more than £175.
